A Guide to Your Expander Journey with Dr. Maddie Phillips

Hey, everybody! I'm Dr. Maddie Phillips at PT Orthodontics, and I'm so excited to talk to you today about your expander.

Expanders are incredible tools that can make a big difference in your orthodontic journey. I had an expander back in the day, and it helps eliminate crossbites, create a beautiful wide smile, and can even help with airway improvement.

Let’s dive into the details!

What is an Expander, and How Does it Work?

This is our expander right here. We take a mold, deliver it, and cement the expander in place. It's cool because your mom, dad, or even you get to play orthodontist by turning the expander!

Your orthodontist will guide you on how many turns to make and over how many days. The turning process is straightforward and involves a small key provided by your orthodontist.

How to Use the Expander Key

Here are clear instructions for using the expander:

1. Make sure that the rotating part goes upwards.

2. Insert the expander key into the hole you see first, and then rotate it back towards the throat.

3. Ensure you turn the expander fully until the next hole appears. If the next hole doesn’t fully appear, you won’t be able to complete the next turn.

It’s also important to remove the key correctly:

- Pull the key backward to remove it. Don’t pull it forward, as this will undo the turn.

You can let go of the key once it’s in the hole—it will stay in place until the turn is completed.

What to Expect During Expansion

As you turn your expander, you might feel a little discomfort. That’s normal and means you’re getting a good expansion. You might also notice a small space opening between your front teeth. Don’t worry—this is a really good sign of proper skeletal expansion, and the gap will close over time.

It’s essential to continue your turns as prescribed by your orthodontist, even if the space between your teeth feels unusual.

Quick Instructions Recap

- Open your mouth wide and insert the swivel key into the hole in the appliance.

- Push the key steadily toward the back of the mouth until the rotation stops.

- Check if the next hole has appeared and carefully remove the key.

Repeat this process as directed by your orthodontist.

With these detailed instructions, you’re ready to handle your expander confidently. We’re excited to help you along your smile journey!
